The Long Road Ahead
As we celebrate Voyager 1's upcoming milestone, we must also acknowledge the challenges ahead. The spacecraft is gradually losing power, and its signal will eventually fade beneath the cosmic static. Its thrusters will run out of fuel, and it will lose the ability to point its antenna towards Earth. However, even then, Voyager 1's journey will continue, silently drifting through the cosmos.
It's a journey that will take it to the inner edge of the Oort Cloud, then beyond the Sun's gravitational reach, and eventually, in about 40,000 years, it will come within 1.7 light-years of the red dwarf star, Gliese 445.
