The installation of a new sewage lift station on Superior Street in Victoria has sparked frustration among residents, who are grappling with the constant noise, construction delays, and, most notably, the overwhelming smell. Jay Morrit, a resident living in close proximity to the station, describes the situation as a "smelly, noisy eyesore." The lift station, measuring just 25 feet from his property, emits an industrial hum and high-pitched noises, making it nearly impossible to open windows, especially in the kitchen. This has led to a range of reactions, from mild discomfort to severe discomfort, as Morrit explains.
The project, initiated by the City of Victoria, was initially planned with three kiosk stations in front of the townhouses. However, the final design has been altered, resulting in the removal of the boulevard and the installation of cement. Kathleen Nichols, another resident, expresses her surprise at the changes, as the city had not communicated these alterations. The presence of a large vent stack, described as resembling a signpost, has also caused concern.
The construction delays, attributed to supply chain challenges and construction complexities, have further exacerbated the situation. As of July, the project is still in its final stages, with the city acknowledging the ongoing work on odour-control measures. These measures, according to Colleen Mycroft, a city spokesperson, involve creating odour-control inserts to combat the smell and noise. However, the effectiveness of these measures is yet to be determined, as the city estimates that additional options may be required, which could take several months to implement.
The impact of the lift station extends beyond the immediate area. Jill Davies, whose basement suite experienced a sewage backup in April, is still undergoing renovations. The city is being urged to address the issues caused by the lift station replacement, as three other units experienced similar backups. The ongoing construction and the lack of a clear completion date have left residents in a state of uncertainty, with large fencing and part of the sidewalk sectioned off.
This situation raises questions about the communication and planning of urban infrastructure projects. Residents are left to cope with the immediate consequences, while the city works on finding solutions. The challenge lies in balancing the need for infrastructure improvements with the well-being of the local community, ensuring that future projects are more transparent and considerate of the residents' quality of life.
